Companies face increasing pressure to improve productivity and compress project schedules. Aspen Basic Engineering is proven on world-scale projects to deliver basic engineering packages faster and with fewer resources, promote agility, and integrate global design teams. Aspen Basic Engineering is a core element of AspenTech’s aspenONE® Process Engineering applications.
Features
- Share Accurate and Consistent Data: Data is entered into Aspen Basic Engineering once, then maintained in a single, up-to-date central repository and shared by all team members in any location. Aspen Basic Engineering manages data for multiple process cases and allows for different controlling cases to be selected or assembled for each equipment item. Access to edit or view specific data can be limited to certain individuals and by work process stage.
- Intelligent Diagrams and Datasheets: Includes out-of-the-box support for PFDs, MSDs, DPTDs, and P&IDs, together with a library of over 120 templates for industry-standard and best-in-class datasheets and lists. Documents are separate from the underlying data in Aspen Basic Engineering, and are populated and maintained from the accurate and consistent central repository. Each document may have its own release/issue lifecycle, managed by workflows that are configured to match your current procedures.
- Native Excel Datasheets: ABE datasheets are all native Excel to increase ease of use. The flexibility and features of Excel are combined with the standardization and project-wide control of ABE. Existing Excel datasheets can be rapidly configured to be used within the system.
- Rapid Datasheet Configuration: A drag and drop datasheet definer tool allows for sets of datasheets for a customer or project to be quickly defined, speeding project start-up.
- Integrated Design Tools: Aspen Basic Engineering includes interfaces to load multiple cases of data from all major process simulators, including Aspen Plus®, Aspen HYSYS®, and Aspen Custom Modeler®. Data for specific cases, or from a designated controlling case, can be transferred to Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger and Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger for design and rating calculations, or to third-party heat exchanger design products
- Transition Rapidly to the Basic Engineering Package: Simulations can be expanded into PFDs and P&IDs. The expansion workflow in Aspen Basic Engineering applies templates to eliminate routine work while emphasizing the user’s engineering judgment. Templates may be extended or modified by users.
- Design Re-use: Whole or partial designs and documents for standard items in Aspen Basic Engineering may be saved into a library of modular design templates, managed by Aspen Basic Engineering, and re-used in future projects.
- Create Accurate Estimates from the Design: Design data in Aspen Basic Engineering can be transferred to Aspen Capital Cost Estimator to initialize or re-baseline cost estimates that become increasingly precise as the design evolves.
- Leverage Existing In-House Tools: In-house engineering tools, including spreadsheets and in-house programs, can be seamlessly integrated into Aspen Basic Engineering through standard interfaces including COM, .NET and XML. Microsoft® Office documents can be integrated using the point-and-click “Bridge”.
- Architected for Global, World-Scale Projects: Aspen Basic Engineering was architected for globally distributed, multi-user, concurrent work sharing, and offers multiple options for users to connect to the central repository. Aspen Basic Engineering stores its data in a standard database (Oracle or SQLServer). It has been proven on multi-billion dollar world-scale projects executed across the globe and in collaborative joint venture projects.
- Configurable to your Standards: Tools are supplied with which you can configure Aspen Basic Engineering to match company- or project-specific symbology and datasheets, and to capture engineering standards and best practices in the Aspen Basic Engineering knowledge base. Multiple projects with different configurations can be executed simultaneously. Datasheet configuration re-uses datasheet templates in Excel if available.
- Industry-Leading Data Model: The Aspen Basic Engineering “Core Common Data Model” (CCDM) provides industry-leading breadth and depth of coverage of process and mechanical design data for all equipment types encountered in typical projects. CCDM underpins all out-of-the-box content in Aspen Basic Engineering, provides a reusable resource to in-house configuration projects, and can be extended to accommodate non-typical process equipment
Benefits
Aspen Basic Engineering has delivered over a thousand projects ranging in size from small process units to $4 billion world-scale petrochemical complexes, in a wide range of industries including refining, chemicals, power, consumer goods, mining and minerals, and nuclear. Specific benefits reported include:
- Schedule for basic engineering packages of licensed technologies compressed by 6 months using design re-use
- Basic engineering efficiency improved by 30%
- Opportunity to grow business by 30%, staffed almost entirely by manpower freed by increase in productivity on existing projects
- Effort to achieve error-free deliverables reduced by 25% as all transcription and consistency issues eliminated
- One complete revision cycle eliminated in detailed engineering by eliminating rework due to errors in basic design data
- Agility and global resource smoothing, essential to ongoing business
